St. Joseph Health Auxiliary Donates Over $142,000 to St. Joseph Health

Posted in: Partnerships

Bryan, TX, October 1, 2020— In August, the St. Joseph Health Auxiliary made three donations totaling over $142,000 to various St. Joseph Health departments. Of the total, $125,000 went to the St. Joseph Health Foundation’s “Advancing Technology and Saving Lives” initiative, $16,000 was given towards student scholarships for 2020, and $1,058 was given to purchase two iPads for the St. Joseph Health Spiritual Care department to utilize with patients in isolation.

“We are proud of the work the Auxiliary does and we are humbled to be the recipient of this generous gift,” says Theron Park, President and CEO of St. Joseph Health. “This donation allows us to not only purchase equipment that is needed and will benefit our community, but also allows us to support future healthcare providers.”

The sum given to the St. Joseph Health Foundation for the “Advancing Technology and Saving Lives” initiative, in addition to other very generous donations, allows St. Joseph Health to purchase a 3D Tomosyntheses Unit, the standard of care for breast cancer screenings, delivering fewer false-positives and detecting breast cancer in earlier stages compared to traditional mammography machines, and will allow St. Joseph Health to better serve the needs of women in the Brazos Valley.

This new machine offers comforts and conveniences for women who need to schedule their annual mammogram, including the SmartCurve Breast Stabilization System, which delivers a more comfortable mammogram without compromising image quality, workflow or dose, and tomosynthesis guidance to localize lesions for biopsy.

“3D mammography is now the standard in breast cancer screening. This technology delivers more accurate readings and is able to detect potential cancers sooner than a traditional 2D screening. Early detection is key to winning the battle against breast cancer. This additional 3D mammography machine will save lives here in the Brazos Valley,” says Elizabeth Freeman, Breast Health Navigator for St. Joseph Health.

The machine was installed at the College Station Hospital Breast Imaging Center earlier this month. The Breast Imaging Center in College Station offers women a calming place to check their mammogram off of their to do list, in a healing and comforting environment.
